Antibodies help to protect the body from bacteria, viruses, and other dangerous foreign substances. They can do this because they bind to specific molecules on foreign substances called antigens. If these antigens bind with antibodies, they can no longer harm your body.
Antibodies also keep your blood from clotting. This is important because when your blood clots, it seals off the passage of harmful substances like bacteria, viruses, and toxins. If you lose too much blood, it can cause a life-threatening condition like a stroke or heart attack.
In addition to protecting the body from dangerous pathogens, antibodies also stimulate immune cells called T lymphocytes to do their job effectively. They do this by allowing them to fight infections.
What are the significant side effects of Xolair?
The most common side effects of Xolair are the same as those associated with any other steroid-based medication. This means there can be an increased risk of problems like a rare form of bone marrow depression, fluid retention, and pain at the injection site. Some patients will also suffer from gastrointestinal distress or depression, liver function impairment, and nervous system problems, including low blood pressure, fainting spells, dizziness, anxiety, and insomnia.

- Chest tightness or wheezing
- Nausea and stomach pain worsen or don’t go away with medicine for stomach upset.
- Mouth sores, fever, chills, body aches, and feeling tired. This can also happen after the injection of Xolair.
- Your doctor will talk about this with you if you are taking Xolair and getting chemotherapy simultaneously.
- These symptoms should go away 1-2 days after you finish your chemotherapy.
- If they don’t get better by then, talk to your doctor.
- Changes in the number of white blood cells in your blood.
What are the precautions when taking Xolair?
Xolair must be used along with an entire course of chemotherapy or radiation therapy for cancer. If you start Xolair and do not finish your chemotherapy simultaneously, you will not be protected from getting an infection or becoming sick from chemo/radiation treatment. You could get ill or die from this type of chemo/radiation treatment if you don’t have enough protection. If you have trouble keeping food down while using Xolair, ask your doctor to give you a pill that contains medicine to help with stomach upset called acebutolol.
While on Xolair, avoid contact with people who have any infection. This could be infections like the common cold or something more serious, like tuberculosis (TB). Call your doctor right away if you get a cold or other condition while on Xolair.
What does Xolair cost?
